El Rancho was a famous roast chicken spot in Miraflores that for children of the 70s and 80s was like visiting Disney World due to its attractions and mechanical games. In its comfortable facilities, many celebrated their birthdays. Today it is only a memory, as is the characteristic flavor of its grilled chicken marinated with lemon and beer.
Founded in 1957, El Rancho was famous for its delicious roast chicken served with crispy French fries and fresh vegetable salad. It was founded by Isidoro Steinmann, a Swiss immigrant, after acquiring the special oven for cooking chickens invented by Franz Ulrich, another Swiss immigrant, who had his workshop in La Victoria.
It became a beloved spot for families, with a large playground with various amusements for children, including rides, trampolines, and a ball pit, while adults could rent cabanas for parties. At night, it was transformed into a restobar for adults to enjoy alcoholic beverages and music. Over time, competition from fast food joints and other chicken restaurants caused a decline in El Rancho's popularity, ultimately resulting in its closure.
In 2008, renowned chef Gastón Acurio visited to savor its unique flavors, but by then the restaurant had already fallen into disarray. That same year, a construction company purchased the land for $7 million, leading to the complete demolition of El Rancho and the construction of a modern condominium.
